Often heard wordpress is loading slow or time outs. People agonising on speed of site can rejoice now, they can increase speed of site substantially.
Well there are many ways to get it done like :
Enable compression via .htaccess
The code below should be added to your .htaccess file…
mod_gzip_item_include file .(html?|txt|css|js|php|pl)$
mod_gzip_item_include handler ^cgi-script$
mod_gzip_item_include mime ^text/.*
mod_gzip_item_exclude mime ^image/.*
mod_gzip_item_exclude rspheader ^Content-Encoding:.*gzip.*
The instructions and code above will work on Apache. If they are not working there is another way that may work for you. If the above code did not seem to work, remove it from your .htaccess file and try this one instead…
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/plain
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/css
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xhtml+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/rss+xml

HUMMINGBIRD BY wpmudev.org
Not that tech savvy.. Leave everything and install Hummingbird and just follow the plugin and see the major difference in google speed test. Hummingbird zips through your site finding new ways to make it load faster, from file compression and minification to browser caching – because when it comes to pagespeed, every millisecond counts.
Optimus reduces the file size of uploaded media files automatically. Depending on the image and format, reductions in size of up to 70% are possible. Several kilobytes can be saved per image—these savings contribute positively to the performance of the blog website. What’s most impressive about the compression technology: the quality of the images is maintained.
I’ve tried all the above on a shared basic server and made a speed difference from 29% to good 85%….
Caution : The use of above mention information is totally upon your own risk. Please take a manual backup of your database and wordpress sites before. Good Luck
